Raku Pottery

Tom and Wanda Clarke have been in business as West Sioux Ceramics/Dakota Potters Supply in Sioux Falls for 35 years. The pottery technique they will be using is known as raku. During the workshop, bisque pieces will be glazed, fired, smoked, cooled and ready to take home in a matter of 2 to 3 hours. Students will pick out their own pre-fired clay pieces, or use their own from the Building a Pot class, and glaze them. The Clarkes will place the pieces in a raku kiln, and once the appropriate temperature is reached, the ware is removed and placed in a container with combustible material, such as newspaper, wood chips, saw dust, straw, salt, etc. The container is then sealed to ensure all the oxygen is depleted. The flames are smother and the glaze traps the carbon from the smoke in the glaze. The end result depends on the glaze and combustible materials used. Usually, the results are very colorful and vary greatly. Each class participant will have many choices available for purchase that day.
