BAC Board Artist Exhibit

The artists on the Board of Directors of the Brookings Arts Council are displaying their work through September 21 at the BAC. While not all the members of the board consider themselves visual artists, many of the board members do actively pursue the visual arts - everything from ceramics to photography to painting. The exhibit includes the work of Linda Hoffelt, Karen Kinder, Dr. Matt James, Mary Husman and Joye Ann Billow.
A closing reception will be held Friday, September 21 from 5:30 to 7 pm.

Winners of the 36th Annual Fine Arts Exhibition Announced
We are pleased to announce the winners of this year's fine arts exhibition:
First Place - Chad Nelson, Sioux Falls: A Season in the Sky - a reductive woodcut
Second Place - Molly Wicks, Brookings: Map - latex on plywood
Third Place - Jennifer Stone, Watertown: Pandemonium - mixed media
Fourth Place - Donna Lee Huff Bartholow, Brookings - Buffalo Hunt II - mixed media
Honorable Mentions:
Jerry DeWald, Watertown: Culture de la Prairie - stained glass
Karen Kinder, Brookings: Grazing Cows - oil on canvas
First through fourth place receive cash prizes to be awarded at the artists' reception, Friday, August 24 from 5:30 - 7 pm. Winning artists will be speak briefly about their pieces.This year's exhibit includes 51 pieces. The BAC is open Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 5 pm.
This year's jurors were Professor Diana Behl, Printmaking, SDSU and Dr. Leda Cempellin, Art History, SDSU.

New Harmonies Exhibit
Thanks to a number of great volunteers, the New Harmonies - a traveling Smithsonian exhibit is up! We're open Noon to 5, Tuesday through Saturday. Please come and visit. Many of the exhibits are interactive and all of them are a lot of fun. The PDF below lists some of the speakers we will have on the roots of American Music.
A big thank you to every one at the Traveling Exhibits Section of the Smithsonian and the South Dakota Humanities Council for allowing us an opportunity to host this exhibit!

Location: Kidoodle Way (4th Street between the Children's Museum & the Brookings Arts Council
Unleash your imagination and see what you can create with a 4 ft x 4 ft piece of sidewalk as your canvas!
Each paid registrant receives a 4 ft x 4 ft square of sidewalk and a box of 48 brilliant-colored soft chalk pastels. There are different participation categories including Family Fun ($10 w/ free ice cream cone for the participants) and individual Young Adult and Adult categories ($20 each) which are eligible for cash prizes.
Hosted by the Children's Museum and the Brookings Arts Council. Pre-registration is a must and the deadline is July 7 at 5 pm.

36th Annual Fine Arts Open Exhibition
Important dates for the 36th Annual Fine Arts Open Exhibition:
July 27: All work must be at the Center no later than 5PM on Friday, July 27.August 1-24 Exhibition dates: Tuesday- Saturday from 12-5 PM
August 26: Closing Reception on Friday, August 24, form 4:30 - 7PM for the artists and public.
September 1: Work must be picked up at the Center by 5 PM (during regular hours of operation)

From Hobbyist to Professional
Judy Thompson--Artist, Presenter
How can you get your work noticed by the public? How can you develop a market to sell your work? How should I contact a gallery or museum? This workshop will give you practical steps and ideas on marketing your artwork. Judy will cover such practical topics as:
* Finding your niche in the marketplace.
* Writing effective artist statements
* Developing an image through brochures, business cards, letterhead, etc.
* Creating your own publicity through press releases and other media
* Website promotion
* Photographing your work effectively
* Writing proposals and contacting galleries and museums
* Creative ways to “get out there!”
Be prepared to roll up your sleeves and create your own marketing plan. Write and critique artist statements, bios and resumes in a supportive, encouraging setting.

Judy Thompson is an award winning artist who paints the people and places of the Midwest. Her accomplishments include 1st prize at the 2010 Iowa Watercolor Society Exhibition; selection as Artist-in-Residence at the Homestead National Monument in Beatrice, NE and the recipient of a grant by the Iowa Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Her work can be found in private and public collections across the United States. She is currently represented by Rehfeld’s Art and Framing in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Judy is a winsome and engaging instructor who loves to share her passion for watercolor painting. Mostly self taught, Judy believes that painting is a lifelong journey of discovery and enjoyment. When she is not painting, Judy and her husband enjoy hiking and biking through the prairies which surround her Iowa home.

Dive into the beautiful, flowing medium of watercolor! Judy will help you develop a working knowledge of watercolor fundamentals which will allow you to make the most of this beautiful, transparent style of painting. Understand how to build color depth through washes and glazing. Learn about color mixing and how different papers, pigments and brushes will produce different results. Practice wet-on-wet, spattering, resists, and other simple techniques. This hands-on, informative class will allow you to confidently paint in watercolor in whatever style you choose.Materials List:

32nd Open Photography Exhibition Winners!

Two Brookings photographers, Jerry Thoms and Cynthia Strande have taken first place in the Brookings Arts Council’s Annual Photography Contest. Thoms won the color division with his photograph “ Weimaraner with Ringneck.” Strande took first in the black and white division with “Memories.” Both photographers will receive a $75.00 check.
Second place in the color division went to Sherilyn Bosch of Brookings for “Sunflower,” while “An Eye on London” by Thomas Jones of Madison won second in the black and white. Bosch and Jones will both receive a $50.00 check.
Another Madison photographer, Jerad Schlobohm won third place in the color division for “Time Passes” and Bruce photographer, Kylie Eckman’s “Remembering Auntie” took third in the black and white division. Both photographers will receive a $25.00 check.
Ken Starkenburg of Sioux Falls judged this year’s exhibit. He will be present at the artists’ reception, Friday, January 27 from 5:30 to 7 pm for the awards presentation and brief talk on the winning photographs. He will also be available to the participating photographers who wish a personal critique of their entered work.

Roc Day 2012
Roc Day 2012 is a success! The Fiber Works Guild gathered on Saturday from 12-5:00pm at the Brookings Arts Council to show off a variety of fiber arts and skills (knitting, weaving, spinning, etc). With food and fiber arts the BAC was the place for people who love fiber works!
